Obituary of Dorothy M. Gara

Dorothy M. Gara a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at home surrounded by her family and under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born in Niagara Falls, NY in 1933 she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Alex) Wojtowicz. Dorothy graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1951. On June 14, 1952, she married the love of her life, Anthony Gara and they have been married for 68 years.

Mrs. Gara was an employee of the Niagara Falls City School District for 36 years as the cook at Lasalle Senior High School. Along with her day job, she also worked nights and weekends at the Day's Inn Downtown for 30 years as a Banquet waitress on the 7th floor.

She was a member of the 18-hole Tuesday Golf league, the Teacher's league on Wednesday and played 18 holes on Thursday. She was an honorary member of the Niagara Frontier Country Club. Mrs. Gara also belonged to the Wednesday Night lawn bowling league, along with the Thursday night Ladies bocce league.

As for the wintertime, she enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge club. Mrs. Gara was also a member of the Altar Rosary, Martha's, annual Basket Auction and garage sales at St. John DeLasalle Parish, she worked on them all.

Her greatest love with her husband were their beloved children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving along with her husband is her son, Mark(Cynthia) Gara of Concord, CA.; daughter, Susan(Russell)Petrozzi and son, John(Suzie) Gara all of Niagara Falls, NY; grandchildren, Rachael(Craig) Goldenberg of LI, NY, John(Lynda)Marino of Amherst, NY, Breanna(Sean)Flatery of North Carolina, JD Gara of NF, NY, Peter(Cheryl) Gara of Oregon, Ben Gara of San Francisco, CA, Anne(Kevin) Burgess of NF, NY and Katherine(Wesley) Walker of NY,NY; great-grandchildren, Chase Goldenberg of LI, NY, Claire and Logan Marino of Amherst, NY, Nolan and Warren Gara of Oregon and Joseph Burgess of NF, NY; sister, Eleanor(late Matthew) Rutkowski and sister in-law, Rose(Victor) Muto. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Bedsides her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Agnes (Hayes, Carl) Messersmith Neuenfeld and Helen Wojtowicz; brother Edward Wojtowicz; brother & sister in-laws, Sam and Nancy Gara, Mary and Walter Grochiwina and Frank Gara (Dottie).

Friends may call Wednesday, May 22nd from 3-8 PM at ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME INC., 319 24th Street, cor of Welch Ave, Niagara Falls, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 23rd at St. John De Lasalle Parish, 8627 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Slavomir Siok and Rev. Stewart Lindsay officiating. Entombment following in Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, Lewiston, NY.
