Mayako Holka

Obituary of Mayako Holka

Mayako "Mickey" Ishikawa Holka, 90, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on November 7, 2020 at Schoellkopf Health Center. Born in Yokohama, Japan, on July 11, 1930, she was the daughter of Ekai and Kiko Ishikawa, the youngest of nine children. During the Korean War, Mickey met her husband Calvin Holka (a U.S. Army MP) and they were married before he returned to the U.S. At just 21, and with her new-born son, Raymond, Mickey boarded the USMS Freeman bound for Seattle. Two weeks later she met Calvin in Niagara Falls, NY, where they made their life together. Mickey was caring, determined and hardworking. Whether at home for her family waking daily before dawn cleaning the house, making and mending clothes for herself and the whole family, feeding everyone morning and night, or at the Hitching Post Restaurant spending 20 plus years cooking Buffalo wings every day, feeding the community, Mickey cared for everyone she touched. Her cheesecakes and cherry pies were known all around town; she showed her love and compassion for others easily and often. Mickey is remembered as a loving and dutiful wife, mother, and grandmother by her family, and as a youthful, kind, charming and generous friend, always ready for a chat and a laugh. She is survived by her sons, Raymond Franklin Holka of Niagara Falls, NY, and Paul Eugene (Ann) Holka of Michigan; her granddaughter, Christa Mayako Holka of London, England; and her grandson, Paul Gregory Holka of Michigan.
